The High Commission of India in Colombo commemorated India's 75th Republic Day on January 26, 2024, celebrating the day the Indian Constitution came into effect in 1950. The Indian Constitution's Preamble, declaring India a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, and Democratic Republic, was especially highlighted during the festivities.

The event, held at India House, the residence of the High Commissioner of India, saw High Commissioner Santosh Jha unfurling the Indian national flag and inspecting the Guard of Honour. Jha also recited parts of the Indian President's Republic Day address.

A standout feature of the celebration was a cultural program organized by the High Commission's cultural wing, the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center. It included performances by the Sri Lanka Navy band and a display of India's cultural diversity through various folk dances. Notably, the Garba of Gujarat, a recent addition to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List of Humanity, was performed.

Several hundred members of the Indian community attended the event.

Earlier in the day, High Commissioner Jha paid homage to the fallen heroes of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) at the IPKF memorial.

This year's Republic Day also marks more than six months since the India-Sri Lanka Economic Partnership Vision was adopted, initiated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe in July 2023. This partnership aims to enhance connectivity in multiple dimensions, fostering shared and sustainable economic prosperity.

The Consulates General of India in Hambantota and Jaffna, along with the Assistant High Commission in Kandy, also observed the 75th Republic Day of India with special events.

This celebration serves as a reminder of the deep cultural ties and ongoing economic collaboration between India and Sri Lanka.
