International Day of Yoga was celebrated in Kenya and held at the United Nations complex in the expatriate hub of Gigiri in the capital Nairobi. It was attended by the Indian High Commissioner to Kenya Virandar Paul and the UN resident coordinator for Kenya, Stephen Jackson.

Speaking on the occasion on June 21, Paul said that Yoga had played a considerable role in the last two years when the world was battling the coronavirus pandemic. He observed that Yoga had helped those who had been depressed or fallen mentally ill due to job loss.

He said Yoga had contributed significantly to the overall health of Kenyans and the world.

Jackson said with the COVID-19 pandemic still lingering, the practice of Yoga would promote mental strength and health, especially for those who were having to isolate themselves from family and friends. He added that it was a part of the UN agenda to promote global health.

During the event, there was a brief Yoga session in which everyone participated.
