Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay and Sri Lankan's Minster for Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, Jeevan Thondaman, exchanged diplomatic notes to triple the cost of housing units under Phase-3 of the Indian Housing Project in Sri Lanka.

This denotes Phase-3 of the Indian Housing Project being expedited across seven districts across  Central, Uva, and Southern Provinces.

The Indian Housing Project by the  Government of India is funding 4000 homes to be built in plantation regions of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has witnessed nearly 46,000 houses built in the island nation during the first two phases of this project.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier announced the construction of another  10,000 homes in plantation areas. This marks an important step toward alleviating Sri Lanka's housing crisis and ensuring a brighter future for its citizens.

The exchange of diplomatic notes between the two countries occurred at an important juncture as the Indian-Origin Tamil community marks 200 years since they arrived and established roots in Sri Lanka's plantation areas.
